The IL-1 receptor family member ST2 was originally described in the context of inflammation, cell proliferation, and autoimmune diseases involving T helper type 2 lymphocyte responses. Since then, ST2 is now known as a unique biomarker with pluripotent effects in vivo, including a powerful role in cardiovascular disease. In the setting of mechanical cardiomyocyte and cardiac fibroblasts stretch, the ST2 gene is strongly induced and the resulting ST2 proteins are closely linked with cardiac remodeling and fibrosis in HF. In its interaction with IL-33, a protein with antifibrosis and antiremodeling effects, ST2 actively participates in inducible pathways in mitigating biomechanical stress.
